This book collects and anthologizes for the first time texts about rebetiko that are unpublished and previously unexamined, beyond their initial appearance in the periodical and daily press from 1929 to 1959. The decades of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, when the anthologized texts first became public, are widely regarded as the timeframe during which the "birth," flourishing, and supposed decline of rebetiko music took place. Consequently, it is absolutely interesting to explore how this genre was received, commented on, evaluated, and generally textualized by public discourse, as reflected in the important contemporary source that is the ephemeral and periodical press of the time. The plethora of information, comments, evaluations, and assessments of rebetiko contained within the pages of this volume allows the reader to gain a sufficient understanding of the perception of rebetiko "from above" or, indeed, "from the outside," that is, outside of the socio-cultural world that created it.
During the twelve years since the first edition, ongoing rebetology research has uncovered very interesting additional texts and documents that had previously remained unpublished. In its current, exceptionally expanded form, the image of the perception of rebetiko during this period not only "opens up" but also presents a multitude of contemporary materials that further illuminate the trace left by this popular cultural phenomenon.
