The book aims to introduce the reader to the concept and theory of deterrence and, more broadly, to strategic thinking.
This is attempted through the examination of a specific manifestation of deterrence, that which was initially created through competition and subsequently through the balance of strategic systems between the two superpowers, the USA and the USSR, during the Cold War.
The book offers a wealth of information about the Cold War, examines the strategic thinking of the USA and the USSR, studies the philosophy or theory of deterrence in general, and finally, indirectly aims to open the discussion about the relationship between competition and deterrence between Greece and Turkey, in both its conventional and nuclear dimensions.
Three findings emerge from the study. First, any military doctrines must be based on a real foundation of power. Second, effective agreements (arms control) are based on real power balances. Finally, it is possible, at least temporarily, for even the weaker party to effectively deter the stronger one.
