The traditional Greek culture displays a great wealth of forms and local variations, the study of which is dedicated to the science of Folklore.
Some aspects of this cultural system, primarily in their local expressions, are the subject of the current volume—partial aspects that can, however, be connected into chapters and collectively form sections that in turn will constitute pieces in the splendid mosaic of Greek folklore.
The historical roots, customs and traditions, as well as the artistic folk narrative within the framework of Greek traditional culture, are the axes of research in this book.
The author, through archival, bibliographical, and field research, attempts to explore certain aspects of our folkloric reality during a period when tradition is sometimes seen as a burden or a hindrance to progress, rather than being perceived as what it truly is: a foundation for the future, with respect for the past and present of our people.
And this is because, ultimately, our cultural identity is our only solid legacy as we move into the 21st century and the unifying Europe.
