Description

Many people were forced, when they were children, to learn to hide their feelings, desires, and needs very skillfully in order to meet their parents' expectations and earn their "love."

As adults, they may chase success, but they simultaneously have a lurking sense that they are worth nothing. Having never been allowed to express their true emotions and having lost touch with their true selves, they act out their repressed feelings through episodes of depression or compulsive behavior, or even with delusions of grandeur.

Then, in turn, they pass on this legacy of repression to their own children. This poignant and insightful book is a first step toward discovering our needs and our own truth in our effort to break free from this vicious cycle.

The "Drama of the Gifted Child"

Miller argues that the “gifted” child (not only in terms of intelligence, but also emotional sensitivity) learns to perfectly adapt to the needs of their parents, developing a false self.

As adults, these people:

  • May pursue success, but feel an underlying sense of emptiness or that they are worth nothing.
  • Having lost touch with their true self, they express their repressed emotions through depression, grandiose ideas, or compulsive behavior.
  • Unknowingly carry this vicious cycle of repression into their own children.

This heartbreaking book is a first step toward recognizing repressed needs and personal truth, offering insight for liberation from the “prisons of our childhood”.

Very nice book. I first read The Body Never Lies. The truth is that one won me over more in reading than this one.

It mentions some interesting things BUT it is extremely pessimistic and miserable. It left me with a negative feeling and sadness. It harshly blames the parents and does not mention forgiveness anywhere. On the contrary, it encourages the reader to express their anger towards their parents and possibly harbor resentment against them. Why all this? I wonder.. I do not recommend it... these pieces of advice lead nowhere. The sense of injustice that this book promotes can only bring bad psychology to the reader.

It writes important things that everyone should know about children's injuries and parents' behaviors towards children, but it is not easy to read and I got bored from the middle onwards.. Nevertheless, I read it to the end.

I have never read a more pessimistic book. Being a realist in my life, I didn't understand the reason for it not finding a ray of light and being so miserable. It constantly blames the parents and accuses them, feeling anger and hatred towards them. This book caused me a lot of negative emotions.

This book is recommended to many people by psychotherapists and others, so that readers can come into contact with more or less traumatic incidents from their childhood and become sensitized as parents themselves. Although this is in itself an important contribution, in my opinion the book has several weaknesses such as the lack of structure (it is not particularly readable), the adherence and repetition of Freudian ideas that are not supported by empirical research, the generalized pessimism and the lack of realistic proposals for children's growth by applying certain boundaries (the author seems to completely exclude the latter as traumatic, without offering any alternative in such a difficult time for families - see excessive use of technology, etc.).

A punch in the stomach that every person should take. It helps in understanding ourselves. And in the outburst of anger, but ultimately also in forgiveness towards our parents. It protects future children. Even understanding just one page is a gain.

There are many benefits to reading it..
    It is easy to read.
It is worth reading it a second (and more) time as we tend to push away something we read when it reminds us of situations we didn't like...

Very good book! You will definitely identify with a story. You will definitely gain strength from others who have experienced similar situations to yours and you are not alone. I believe everyone should read it, with or without their childhood trauma! Especially those who are preparing to become parents.
It has some unnecessary pages with tedious details, but I do not consider it a decisive factor in the overall book.
