The back is not magnetic, it has an elastic band that surrounds the iPad, and if you have the Pencil, it doesn't magnetize well and doesn't charge. You need to cut the band at that point. Also, the front part magnetizes slightly, but at least the iPad opens and closes when you open and close the case
