The novella by Théodore Fontane, The Adulteress, is remarkable also for the fact that it depicts, in the rich monotonous society of Berlin in 1880, an affair with a pleasant ending. The story is inspired by a famous scandal of the time.

Its theme is the extramarital relationship of Melanie Van der Straaten with Ruben, the young protégé of Melanie's eccentric and cheerful husband, Edges.
