Description

The word "Panagia" is a title of the Theotokos, which was established from the 3rd century A.D. and aims to emphasize that she is the Holy among the Saints.

As a symbol of maternal love and purity, the sweet mother of the God-man, she remains a particularly beloved theme from the early Christian years to the present day in the Orthodox East as well as in the Catholic West. There are numerous icons and frescoes in various Byzantine and modern churches in our country, with the dominant element being the image of Panagia.

The marvelous architecture and rich decoration of the churches reveal the significant and active role of Orthodoxy throughout the centuries, not only for Greece, which was one of the most important centers but also for the entire Christian world.

In our land, which can also be called the country of Panagia, out of 7258 churches, 1667 are dedicated to her. The mother of Christ is described with the most poetic epithets, which vary according to her attributes, and each represents an image that has its own history, miracles, and adventures.

The imagination of her people has given her names according to her attributes or from the miracles attributed to her, from the date of her feast, from the place or manner in which her image was found, from the location and shape of the church, from the method of construction of the temple, and from historical events, even from the founder when it comes to private churches that were established with the initiative and expenses of individuals, the hymnography, and various other events.
