What makes the book a bit difficult to read is that it was not completed from beginning to end by Tolkien himself, resulting in Christopher, his son, taking multiple versions of the same text and trying to put them in order. Each chapter is a different version of the text, with a different beginning and end (since the whole story was not written anywhere as I said) and has commentary by Christopher, trying to show us the differences and highlight the most important points.
For example, some differences are as follows:
1) Changes in character names
2) Change of species (Elf/Human) for some heroes and/or their descendants
3) Changes in battle details, with the same outcome
4) Appearance and disappearance of characters that strongly influenced the story
