In its time -first published in 1837 in Vienna- the dictionary by Nik. Lorentis was an excellent aid for every reader and scholar of ancient letters, history, and mythology.
It was compiled at the request of the same publishers who had arranged for the publication of the three-volume "Dictionary of the Greek Language" by Anthimos Gazis, as "a concise and, as far as possible, comprehensive dictionary of the main names referenced by the ancient classical authors from mythology, history, and ancient geography." It serves as an appendix to any dictionary of the ancient language.
The lexicographer used as sources the works of "poets and prose writers from the classical period of the language to the Byzantine writers." He also consulted similar projects by European Hellenists, ensuring that the dictionary became useful "for the young Greeks studying in schools and engaging with their ancestral language."
