The Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) is considered one of the greatest novelists of all time, a deep anatomist of the human soul. The Double, written in 1846, is one of his earliest works, containing the seeds of the virtues that later manifest in his world-famous works: Crime and Punishment, The Possessed, The Brothers Karamazov.
In The Double, the author dives into the psychological world of the public servant Golyatkin (which brings to mind the biblical Goliath). Our hero wants to follow his own path but also wants to not differ at all from other people. He is torn: the real Golyatkin insists on his individuality, while his double submits to general conformism, becoming just like other people.
Dostoevsky masterfully describes the conflict between the two attitudes, their expression in the hero's life, the tragic outcome...
