The Phanariots get their name from the Phanar of the Golden Horn, where the Patriarchate was established in 1601. Little by little, the Phanar became the center of the expatriate merchants and clergy, thus forming a new aristocracy of our nation after the Fall.
According to the late Gennadios of Heliopolis, “it can be said that from the middle of the seventeenth century until the first quarter of the nineteenth century, the term Phanariot had a dual meaning. The primary and limited meaning implied among other things the resident of the Phanar. The second and broader meaning referred generally to the educated and influential expatriate who held an equivalent ecclesiastical or political position or both.” Here, we are mainly interested in the second meaning of the term.
