How is the relationship between Photography and Painting defined today, or vice versa, Painting and Photography? And what is the relationship of the invention of Photography with the changes in perceptions of the visual language that, in the early 20th century, expressed itself as Modernism?
This is exactly what the book Photography and Painting, 19th - 20th Century explores. A key motive for its writing was the absence from the Greek literature of a comprehensive work on the relationship between Modernism and Photography. The emphasis is placed on the significant role of Photography, whose advent liberated painting from Realism, allowing room for artistic expressions that are now known as Modernism.
Overall, the following are examined: (a) the techniques and themes of early forms of Photography alongside the artistic landscape at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century (the echoes of Neoclassicism, various versions of Romanticism, and the emergence of Impressionism, a movement that was particularly decisive for Photography), (b) the artistic movements of the 20th century and the inclusion of Photography within them (Cubism, Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism, Expressionism, Constructivism, New Objectivity, American Neo-Realism). Special references are made to photojournalism.
The Greek Photography, as well as international trends in Photography after 1960, is also examined, in parallel development with the artistic movements in Europe and America up to the 1980s.
