Marpa, who due to his vast knowledge and excellent translations came to be known as the Translator, apprenticed with several famous teachers of his time during his great travels.
At that time, when Marpa was translating teachings from Sanskrit to Tibetan, translation was not merely a literal word-for-word translation. Marpa underwent all the trials of spiritual practice and illuminated the translated texts with his own experience of the teachings. He lived them himself.
In this way, Marpa truly studied, worked, translated, and practiced for over forty years, and he shared all his achievements with his students and, through them, with later generations. From this exceptional teacher, his student Milarepa received the teachings and became enlightened.
