Description

Description

This book presents the diary records of the author's discussions with Greek democratic leaders, supporters of the junta, and American officials during the charged period of 1971 - 1974.

It features personalities such as K. Karamanlis, P. Kanellopoulos, A. Papandreou, K. Mitsotakis, H. Iliou, I. Zigdis, G. Mavros, M. Theodorakis, the then King Constantine, Archbishop Makarios, and American diplomats in Athens and at the State Department.

These individuals discuss the dictatorship of the colonels and ways to extricate themselves from the deadlock, while also referring to the post-war Greek democracy, its weaknesses, its missed opportunities, and its relationships with the world.

The conversations also capture the profound ferment that was happening during those years within the political forces, as well as the sense of impasse that was often created by Washington's policy, almost exclusively oriented towards serving its strategic interests.

At the same time, there is a reference to the efforts of Greek-Americans - mainly academics - to mobilize public opinion in the United States in favor of restoring democracy in Greece.

In this way, the book offers a picture of the atmosphere in the early '70s: it describes the resistance, its difficulties, as well as the uncertainty created by the imposition and maintenance of the authoritarian regime; it follows the reflections of intellectuals and political leaders regarding the role of the military and the U.S., as well as the future of the Greek political system; finally, it conveys the fears and expectations of the post-junta period.
