Description

The New York sociologist Richard Sennett stated at a conference the day after the Gulf War, which had as its theme "America of the French," that "anti-Americanism is to loathe Americans more than necessary." The volume presents a multifaceted exploration of this term, which is more subjective than scientific.

The historical, ideological, cultural, and cinematic versions of anti-Americanism constitute a tormented love story that often transforms into a relationship of hatred. Every "great" culture and every "great" nation has been met throughout history with a dual approach and mixed emotions: love and hate, awe and rejection.

But what exactly do we call anti-Americanism? What are its boundaries? When does it become a sickness? Why does the Left enjoy defining itself based on its negative feelings towards anything American? And finally, what do Americans do to create such bitter enemies?

This book raises some questions about the fine art of making enemies as well as the hard work of keeping and increasing them. At a time when Europe aspires to unite as the States of America once did, these reflections are more relevant than ever.
