The Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder. Individuals with WBS exhibit mild to moderate intellectual disability, various medical abnormalities, unusual behavior patterns, and facial dysmorphism.
What is particularly intriguing about individuals with WBS is their strikingly contradictory personality profile. While they are characterized by hyperactivity, attention deficit disorder, frequent mood swings, difficulties in mathematical thinking, weaknesses in visual-spatial perception, and excessive anxiety in stressful situations, on the other hand, they are particularly talkative, use rich and high-quality vocabulary, are known for their hypersensitivity, kindness, empathy, interest in their fellow humans, as well as their unusual sociability.
Other notable characteristics include their heightened sensitivity to sounds and their exceptional talent in music. It is impressive that many children with WBS play a musical instrument without ever having learned notes.
Individuals with Williams-Beuren syndrome have an unwavering belief in the goodness of the world, according to the motto: "Evil does not exist." If there were more of these people, then humanity would surely fare better, says the Director of the Mannheim Institute of Mental Health, Meyer-Lindenberg.
