Description & Specifications

TEN DAYS AGO, to be exact, nine days ago, Maigret was seated in his usual spot at the Café Cheval Blanc, in Ménig-sur-Loire, playing belote. He declared himself third trump and at that moment his waiter announced that Mrs. Maigret was asking him to return home because they had a visitor.

Young Jean Mora convinces the inspector to accompany him to New York because he is worried about the life of his father, the wealthy John Mora, Little John, as they call him. But as soon as the ocean liner arrives in New York, the young man disappears.

Maigret sits in the office of Inspector O'Brien and thinks about his first meeting with the powerful Mora. It was strange: he had barely seen him. Their conversation was quite mundane. Yet the inspector suddenly realized that Mora had made a strong impression on him. He saw him again, small and thin, dressed overly impeccably. His face had nothing that drew attention.

So what was it that impressed Maigret so much? He made a great effort to remember, bringing to mind the slightest movements of the petite, nervous, and thin man. And suddenly he remembered his gaze, especially his first glance when Mora did not yet know he was being watched. Little John's eyes were cold!

Four or five times in his life, Maigret had encountered people with cold eyes, those eyes that look at you without creating any human connection. The inspector spoke to Mora about his son, and Little John observed him coldly, without any emotion, as one would observe a stain on the wall.

Inspector Maigret, the famous hero of GEORGES SIMENON, leaves Paris and the French countryside and finds himself in New York and its world. An exceptional book in Simenon's long series of novels.
