Humor and subtle irony dominate and alternate with biting descriptions of representatives from the psychiatric world. However, as psychotherapists are demystified, the allure of psychotherapy increases. Yalom presents it in a new light: it is a companionable journey towards achieving genuine human contact.

In a cinematic manner, with continuous twists and detective suspense, Yalom analyzes modern society and human relationships in his "The Couch." "On the Couch" is the free rendering of the English title "Lying on the Couch." Yalom here creates an untranslatable pun with three different meanings: it first indicates the reclining of the analyzed patient on the psychoanalytic couch, symbolizing psychotherapy.

It implies the sexual act between the patient and therapist, one of the central ethical issues posed and interpreted within the book, and finally, it refers to the concealment and distortion of truth, to the lies that may infiltrate the therapeutic process. The author methodically tackles these three issues, organically integrating them into a captivating narrative.
