Description & Specifications

The rural house of Tinos is a primary, archetypal form of housing that resolves primary needs of life and work with admirable simplicity and completeness. It embodies the concept of economy and serves as a link in an ecological chain, both during the time it is active, "alive," as it ages, and also when it "dies."

The rural house of Tinos was formerly the first and only, and more recently the second, the seasonal home of the shepherd or farmer, located far away from organized settlements, within the field they cultivate or where the herd grazes. It consists of a set of facilities, which, apart from the house—a single-room intended for the habitation of humans only—includes facilities for processing the harvest, such as a threshing floor, a grape press, a rake, a hayloft, and also shelter for animals, such as a cattle shed, a pigeon loft, a pigsty, etc.

Numerous rural houses scattered across the mountains of Tinos shape, along with the countless steps-stairs, the "man-made," "handcrafted" natural landscape of the island, with respect for what surrounds them and sensitivity to the way in which they integrate into the immediate and broader environment.
