The Orthodox icon of the Bridegroom is not simply a condensed image of the Passion or the Descent of our Lord. It is primarily a resurrection image, an image of glory and triumph for the Church. In the sight of the dead Jesus, the Church recognizes her Savior, her Bridegroom. The one who rose, overcoming the power of death; she sees the King of Glory.
