A typical Athenian, Trygaeus, disgusted by the incessant mutual slaughter of people, rides a giant beetle and ascends to the sky to learn from the gods themselves if they intend to put an end to the carnage on earth. When he sees the dreadful War pounding people and places in his mortar, he no longer hesitates for a moment; he immediately sets up an entire operation, ignoring all dangers, to free Peace from the cave where she is imprisoned. Through this story, Aristophanes reminds us of our responsibility: it is the utmost duty of people to free Peace from her dreadful prisons every time.
