Description

The writing of a History of Greek Theater in the 20th century is an urgent need, imposed both by the complete absence of a similar synthetic work that addresses the subject within the span of a century, and by the variety of correspondences and relationships it has with society and culture in the same period.
The challenge of such a project finds our personal response in this study. Far from historical-philological approaches that staticize the dynamically evolving phenomenon of theatrical expression and weaken it from its social, ideological, artistic, and broader cultural content, we aim for a different reading, thus creating new criteria for the research and interpretation of theater. We perceive it not in the typical sense of the dramatic text, but with the contemporary perspective of complex artistic creation that is the performance, and we examine it in the axis of history as well as theory, sociology as well as semiotics of aesthetics and ideology.
Our thought is developed in detail in two volumes and aims to highlight the relationships that exist and operate between contemporary original dramatic production and indigenous tradition (ancient drama, folk culture), but also more broadly, global creation (comparative dramaturgy). [...]
