Writing a History of Greek Theatre in the 20th century is a pressing necessity, imposed both by the complete absence of a similar comprehensive work that addresses the subject over the course of a century, as well as by the variety of correspondences and relationships between it and society and culture during the same period.

The challenge of such an undertaking finds our personal response in this study. Far from historical-literary approaches that staticize the dynamically evolving phenomenon of theatrical expression and weaken its social, ideological, artistic, and broader cultural content, we aim for a different reading, thus creating new criteria for the research and interpretation of theatre.

We consider it not with the formal meaning of the dramatic text, but with the contemporary view of the complex artistic creation that the performance represents, and we examine it along the axes of history as well as theory, sociology as well as semiotics, aesthetics as well as ideology.

Our thought is developed thoroughly in two volumes and aims to highlight the relationships that exist and operate between contemporary original dramatic production and indigenous tradition (ancient drama, folk culture), as well as more broadly global creation (comparative drama).
