I felt the same way. That thrilling anticipation, the camaraderie that made us give friendly pats on the back, to praise even the most insignificant contribution to the common defense, and to cheer together every time we heard some good news.
So what was it? It was something more than common fear, more than the appreciation of what we had and were at risk of losing at any moment. During that time, when the exhilaration of frenzied preparation prevailed, I hadn't realized what it was. Now, reflecting on the events, it's easy to understand. It was hope.
