'Around 1918 to 1919, delegations of French and English representatives came to inspect the facilities of the mining operations. They received a grand welcome at the schools. Students, both boys and girls, lined up in the courtyard, wearing matching uniforms, and sang the French and English national anthems while holding Greek and Turkish flags. In the ceremony hall, they were addressed by the professor Mr. Georgios Felekis. The representatives were surprised and expressed their enthusiasm: 'We never imagined that in the depths of the East there are such Greek schools.'
In the main schools of the Ak-Dag mine, the common Modern Greek language was used. They learned all the well-known school songs, including klephtic-patriotic ones that spoke of freedom. During celebrations, theatrical performances were organized, often with national content. Turkish spectators attended these ceremonies as well. On March 25, 1919, the teaching staff staged the national drama 'Greek Revolution.' At one point in the play, when it depicted the oath of the heroes, kneeling with swords crossed, the Turkish audience imitated the Greeks and stood up in a gesture of respect.
At the same ceremony, Nikolaos Thomaidis, a practicing doctor and photographer, presented a paper model of the battleship Averof, which was auctioned off for the school, as was customary. During the years of persecutions, an orphanage was established that supported 300 children displaced from Pontus. The orphanage received support from Greeks in Istanbul until 1919, when relations between Greece and Turkey intensified. Resources were limited to local fundraising, thanks to the incredible generosity of the mine's notables. The orphans also attended classes in their own separate school. This project was interrupted when the Turks sentenced the leaders to death by hanging.'
