Description

In a gloomy fjord of the Norwegian countryside, at the end of the 19th century, Mrs. Alving prepares, with the help of the family friend, Pastor Manders, to inaugurate an orphanage in memory of her deceased husband. At the same time, she welcomes her son, Oswald, who returns home after some time.

The person who does not appear in the play, yet casts a heavy shadow over the present and future of all, is the deceased Alving. The revelations, both of the corrupt family past and of social hypocrisy, will be devastating for everyone, as no one is innocent.

Mrs. Alving was in love with the pastor and turned a blind eye to her husband's misdeeds, while Manders always represented hypocritical Christian morality. The young Oswald, whose illness is portrayed as a consequence of paternal mistakes, seeks to trap the household servant, Regina, treating her as a lifeline.

Jacob, seemingly naive, exploits everything to survive, be it the life of his daughter or the memory of his deceased wife, while Regina enjoys Oswald's attention in an effort to escape her miserable daily life.

In "Ghosts," presented in a revised version of the excellent translation by Margarita Melberg from Norwegian, Ibsen examines the right of a person to happiness in a society subjected to outdated ideas and moral codes.

With a structure reminiscent of ancient tragedy, the Norwegian playwright depicts all kinds of "ghosts" from the past and present flooding the Alving household and leading to the inevitable destruction of all. Characters steeped in the darkness of their minds seek a "lift" into the sun, in a masterpiece of world theater that, causing great scandal in its time, observes the eternal, desperate, and inescapable fate of mankind.
