The volume includes the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Neograeca Medii Aevi (Medieval Modern Greek), organized by the University of Cyprus, which focused on the transition of Greek vernacular literature from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance—a transition symbolized by the distinctive image of the "poetic" nightingale that sings sadly yet sweetly.
In contrast to more traditional proceedings volumes, this one presents certain innovations that have given a unique direction to the research path. The studies are thematically organized with particular emphasis on issues of publishing methodology and contemporary interpretative approaches, opening up to computer science and the use of computers for conducting literary research.
A special section is dedicated to the distinct literary production of Cyprus, as the island transitions from Frankish to Venetian rule. For the first time, a thematic section on the relationship between text and image in illustrated manuscripts and printed works is included, while an extensive discussion among the presenters on the thorny publishing problems of vernacular texts is also documented.
The volume gives the reader an opportunity to engage "in real-time" with the research problems surrounding a broader range of texts, such as erotic and epic narratives, satirical poems, chronicles, folk songs, popular religious readings, and theatrical works.
At the same time, through their interdisciplinary perspective, the thirty studies provide fertile ground for reflection for philologists, literary critics, comparatists, linguists, and art historians.
