Year 1204 AD: the armies of the Fourth Crusade, which have invaded the Byzantine Empire, capture and plunder Constantinople. Greece is dismembered: new Greek, Frankish, and Venetian states form in the Aegean region.
Three years later, a heterogeneous crowd of adventurers led by the Venetian Marco Sanudo seizes Naxos as well as other islands of the Cyclades. Since then, the island of Ariadne will become the capital of the Duchy of the Aegean or the Archipelago. The Venetians will dominate Naxos for about three and a half centuries, establishing a feudal system that will remain in effect until the early 19th century, resulting in the descendants’ power over the locals being substantially maintained even after the island's conquest by the Turks.
During this time, Naxos will find itself at the center of the Venetian-Turkish competition for dominance in the Aegean, while the arrival and activity of mainly French missionaries on the island, tolerated by the Ottomans, will strengthen the already significant Western presence in the Cyclades during the Ottoman rule.
Silent witnesses of the Latin presence and dominance in Naxos will remain the monuments left behind by the conquerors: the Castle of Chora and the scattered towers throughout the island.
