Description

The central question that serves as the starting point for this book is whether the Popular Orthodox Rally (LA.O.S.) represents the Greek manifestation of the European phenomenon of the extreme or radical right, a question that is essentially twofold. Does it have parallels with parties in Western Europe? Ultimately, is LA.O.S. a party of the extreme or radical right?

This book - which primarily stems from the author's doctoral dissertation - seeks to answer both. It does so by first attempting to sketch a historical portrait of the extreme right in Europe and Greece. Immediately afterward, it seeks to investigate the evolution of LA.O.S.'s electoral influence, as well as to study both its organizational structure and its ideology.

It concludes with an analysis of LA.O.S.'s rhetoric, examining both its parliamentary activities in Brussels and Athens, as well as the political discourse articulated in the announcements from its Press Office, the spelling in the party newspaper (A1), and in the broadcasts of Karatzaferis himself through the party channel TILEASTY. A political discourse that operates through a diverse ethnopopulism which, however, at several points clashes with the purely nationalistic side of LA.O.S., which is represented by the cadres of the Greek Front led by Voridis.

While Karatzaferis shapes his populist politics according to demand, Voridis primarily shapes his positions based on 'supply' - his nationalist ideology. The Nation, LA.O.S., and Populism intertwine but also occasionally clash.
