Description

This study, along with other research attempts, aims to explore these very "blank pages." It seeks the historical data that form the basis for the study of Greek communities on the northeastern shores of the Black Sea, that is, in the former Soviet Union.

It tries to identify the causes of their creation, their internal diversifications, and the impacts of major upheavals on them, both in the Russian and Ottoman Empires in the first quarter of the 20th century. It analyzes their relationship with the Pontic movement that aimed to establish a second Greek state, the ideological pursuits, both nationalist and socialist, as well as the overt and covert connections that linked them to events in Greece.

It examines the forms of their participation in the effort to realize the demand for national completion and their deviations from the dominant choices of the Greek leaderships. At the same time, it analyzes their survival efforts during the Soviet period through the integration of their leadership group into the ideological system of Bolshevism, records their cultural achievements, their print production, and investigates their political demands.

It presents the Stalinist persecutions that followed, the renewal with perestroika, the re-emergence of the Greek movement, and finally the fragmentation of the Greek diaspora in the states that replaced the unified Soviet Union.

It also studies the ideological trends that characterized the Greek communities during their Soviet journey, their concerns about the language issue, their identity, their conflicts with authority, the attempt to move towards Greece, as well as the stance of the Greek state.

In the course of following this complex journey, the decisive element that determined the course and fate of the Greek population emerged: the absence of a territorial point of reference in the Black Sea region.
