Description

Clans of Caledonia is a medium-to-heavy economic game set in 19th century Scotland. At this time, Scotland was transitioning from an agricultural to an industrial country largely based on trade and exports. In the following years, food production increased significantly to meet the needs of the ever-growing population. Linen was replaced by cheaper cotton, and great importance was given to sheep farming. Additionally, whisky production steadily grew, becoming the highest quality alcoholic beverage in Europe.

Players represent historical families with unique abilities and compete in the production, trade, and export of agricultural products and, of course, whisky!

An economical strategy game set in pre-industrial Scotland.
Your goal is to take control of one of the clans and make the best possible use of workers and raw materials, and make the best investments in order to collect the most victory points.
The game unfolds over 5 rounds with 2 phases each, except for the last one, which includes the final scoring phase. In the first phase, players take turns making as many investments as they want until they pass. Investments include placing workers and herds, building dairy facilities and distilleries, cultivating grain, taking on and fulfilling export contracts, upgrading workers and the ability to expand on the board, as well as buying and selling raw materials and processed goods.
In the second phase, you reap the profits of the investments from the first phase, which, besides money, can be raw materials, processed goods, but also valuable goods such as sugar, cotton, tobacco, and hops that are imported as trade goods each time you fulfill an export contract. At the end of the fifth round, and depending on the money, goods, contracts you have fulfilled, as well as the expansion you have achieved on the board, you also receive the corresponding victory points.
The game is easy to understand and fast, but it is a good idea to have the rulebook nearby, especially during the scoring phase. Each clan also has an advantage that the others do not, so it gives you the opportunity to focus on that and exploit it as best as possible to win. The luck factor is completely absent, and that is very good since the game is absolutely fair, thus avoiding tedious arguments over who was lucky and who was unlucky. Also absent are conflicts between opponents, since you do not gain points by blocking or destroying the other player; instead, you focus on your own game, do the best you can, and in the end count the victory points.
In terms of design and component quality, it does not offer anything special, but it has so much content and substance that in the end it does not bother you at all.
The only negative is that there is no insert for the game’s countless pieces. Literally, the box does not close.

One of the best budget games out there:

+Enough depth and variety of strategies to follow.
+Beautiful and high-quality components (though a bit tiny).
+Simple and quick turns. One action - next.
    +Almost no luck.

-The wooden resource tokens are few and do not always suffice for a 3-4 player game.
    -Rule volume.
    -Time-consuming setup.
