The name given to a newborn (the naming) is a significant event in the Greek family and until a few years ago was also a source of conflict between the groom's family (which was considered to have priority) and the bride's.
In some areas, there were peculiarities, mainly in honor of the "local saints," but the choice was clear until a few years ago, while in recent years it has become more flexible.
Was there an impact of this change in mentality and behavior? Was there a distortion in the percentage of commonly accepted names? How were names chosen in antiquity, in Byzantium, and in general in Greece? Were there differences in the choice of names among Greeks living outside the mainland?
This book attempts to answer these and other questions, based not only on the recording of names but also on two different samples (men and women) from 2005 and 2016.
The analysis of these samples proves useful for the questions we raised.
