Description

Spyridon Trikoupis (1788-1873), a liberal politician with a European orientation, diplomat, and scholar, was the first Prime Minister of Greece and its first ambassador to London. One of the leaders of the English party, deeply constitutional and an admirer of the British system, he introduced his son, Charilaos Trikoupis, to parliamentary governance and inspired him with respect for the Constitution.

Spyridon experienced the fear of being a subject in Messolonghi and Patras, the carefree life of a student in Naples and Paris, the anxiety of the Revolution, the luxury of the aristocratic salons of London, the favor and disfavor of Otto, the exercise of power, and the enforced political inactivity. With an education that was rare for his time and a significant yet largely unknown role during the Greek Revolution, he is considered the quintessential Greek historian of that period.

Lydia Tricha was born in 1950 in Athens, where she studied law. Since 1987, she has been engaged in researching modern Greek history, has worked on the archive of Charilaos Trikoupis, and has published ten books of historical content. For six years, she was actively involved in the administration and direction of E.L.I.A., serving as its general secretary and vice president. Today, she is the vice president of the Foundation for Education and European Culture.

Also published by Polis is her book Charilaos Trikoupis. The Politician of "Who is to Blame?" and "Unfortunately, We Have Bankrupted" (State Biography Award 2017).
