Sixty years after the signing of the Zurich and London agreements, this book examines the actions of Ambassador Georgios Seferiadis (Seferis) regarding the Cyprus issue (1956-1959) and analyzes the much-debated topic of his disagreements and dialogue with Foreign Minister Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas during the negotiation of the agreements (December 1958 - January 1959).
The study of the dialogue between Seferis and Averoff provides great opportunities for assessing the perceptions, schools of thought, and, in particular, the complex mechanism of the settlement of 1959. Thus, it attempts to diagnose the "high strategy" of the Greek side that led to Cypriot independence and also formed part of a much broader and long-term conception of international relations, which ultimately concerned the overall trajectory of the nation in the modern world.
The book is based on many years of extensive archival research in the personal archives of Konstantinos Karamanlis, Evangelos Averoff-Tositsas, Konstantinos Tsatsos, and Georgios Seferis. It has also studied material from the Diplomatic and Historical Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Foreign Office archive, American published documents, as well as other published sources, primarily those concerning Seferis (letters and diary).
