NEW REVISED EDITION

During the years of the junta, ten-year-old Dimitra, along with her twin brother and parents, spends the Easter holidays at their grandparents' house in the village. A series of unexpected events will disrupt the apparent calm of the respectable family, of which the adult members are particularly proud.

A tragic death, the mandated postponement of the much-anticipated wedding, the appearance of an unknown family member until that point, and the well-hidden secret that will come to light will upset the balances and trigger developments. Such that no one had anticipated.

Dimitra, Marios, and their aunt Eleftheria, self-styled as the "Holy Trinity," will be the driving force behind all the dramatic developments. A tender novel about the value of freedom, an allegory for a dark era, and a journey into the innocence of childhood, when only Love matters...

[excerpt from the book]

I hear footsteps approaching the living room. Without lifting the heavy velvet, I see my mother's black high-heeled shoes, which I have secretly worn many times and made me look so tall and big. One heel is a little dusty... The shoes come and go, hurried and serious. They have an important role to play today, replacing Grandma.

“Key position,” my dad says about the disgusting Mr. President. Grandpa's black shoes, polished and with laces, drag a bit and have stumbled twice within half a minute. It’s the first time I see scared shoes.

My dad, from this position, is a pair of brown house slippers. They don’t shine as much as Grandpa's, but they have nice embroidery, which I know he adores. They sit on the couch and hit the floor. Tap, tap, tap. Elegant, nervous embroidery.

The large wooden shoe of Teteria is always the same. How thin her little foot looks above that shoe! The iron sole makes a strange noise today, as if it is rusty. On her good foot, she wears a black shoe with a low heel. Seriously, does Teteria buy only one shoe? And how much does she pay for one? Half of what you pay for a pair? And if she buys a pair, which I find more likely, what happens to the other shoe?

A wave. A small push from the olfactory bulb. It reaches the shore of the cerebral cortex. The excited olfactory cells are disturbed. A smell. It is a smell!

She opens her eyes. She knows it is a new day. She is bored. She finds comfort in her sleep-waking – she has called it that since she was a child. In this state, she controls her thoughts, she controls her dreams.

She mixes them, prioritizes, intervenes in their development. Perfect! She is the ruler of dreams! The house was located on the hills, above the sea. Alone, hidden by thousands of lemon trees, which she liked to call lemon trees because they were huge, much bigger than usual. Thousands? That’s what she thought then. Probably there were far fewer, but who counts lemon trees when they are ten years old?

It was an Easter forgotten in May. A May – a starting point for unprecedented feelings, behaviors, and situations. For all of them. Then a ball of yarn unraveled that no one wanted to touch. Or didn’t know how. And then it was wrapped again with love. After going through pain. Because these almost always go together, she learned that then and became a little wiser.

So it was spring, and with uncombed hair, a dress that sparkled in the sun like a detergent commercial, and scraped knees – she wasn’t exactly the most well-behaved girl in her class – she ran and cried among the blooming lemon trees. That’s what her stubbornness and anger told her to do. Also, she had seen a beautiful blonde actress run like that in a TV show when she broke up with her boyfriend. And most importantly? That way her dress fluttered more – and she liked to see it by turning her head back, risking falling and scraping her weak knees again.
