Globalization, causing profound upheavals in cultures and communities, undermining traditional and non-traditional identities, imposing a unified social and cultural model from above, leads - particularly in culturally exceptional traditional-centered patterns like Islam - to reactions that critically impact its very reproduction.

The Soviet Union was the first to attempt to establish a globalized model, that of existing socialism. Its collapse had internal causes but was triggered after the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the resurgence of Islamism in its southern and central Islamic republics.

In their attempt, the USA, and the West as a whole, to impose the neoliberal globalizing model faced a historic blow with the attack on September 11, 2001, on the centers of American power.

The clash of civilizations, as referred to by Huntington, which the West invoked and used to crush the Orthodox world, particularly Yugoslavia, after the collapse of existing socialism, now turns against its very instigators and takes on literally biblical dimensions. It is literally an Islamic scourge of God.

A process of globalization emanating from specific centers without considering and including other cultures and peoples, built against them or despite their will, is doomed to fail with tragic consequences for all, both perpetrators and victims.
