The binding creaked and the story trembled line by line. How could Travalantoni, a sensible man and a careful writer, have been so mistaken to title it 'The American's Christmas'? Was it perhaps to indicate how he studied under the feet of Gamaliel? It's possible; but as I read it, I felt that tightening sensation, which I had previously experienced while reading a story by Nirvana featuring the heroine Lialio from Skopelos.
I had wondered then how such a knowledgeable friend of Papadiamantis could not foresee that it was extremely risky to borrow the name 'Nostalgos,' now mythical and untouchable. Perhaps he was attempting the definitive return from Skiathos to Skopelos, being a Skopelitan himself, of the delicate girl who pleaded to see the mountains of her island to ease her pains. But the name was unbearable, and the story had collapsed.
