The late decades of the 14th century, as well as the 15th century, were critical milestones for the Ottoman advance into southeastern Europe – an advance that was marked by the conquest and partial incorporation, apart from the Byzantine capital of Constantinople and the last Byzantine strongholds, of the Morea and Trebizond, as well as Bulgaria, Serbia, Wallachia, and Albania.
During their struggles against the powerful Ottoman Sultanate, these countries mounted fierce resistance, producing notable leaders. Furthermore, shortly after the fall of Byzantium, the first revolutionary movements against the conqueror emerged in the Greek region.
