Description

Description

"Linguistic idioms refer to the verbal variations that are observed in specific locations within a broader geographical area, and in this case, within the Greek territory. They represent a distinct way of phrasing and style within the same language. These are peculiar variations of the language of a place.

The Dictionary of the Lefkadian Linguistic Idiom that you hold in your hands belongs to this category and has a three-part subtitle. Its content is based on three concepts: a) Idiomatic, b) Interpretative, and c) Folkloric.

The compiler started with the idea of gathering, as much as possible, all the linguistic peculiarities of the Lefkadian idiom as well as the variations that linguistically characterize our island, whether they were spoken here centuries ago or still live on today in the mouths of the people or have been left forgotten in notarial books, wills, legal documents, and other texts.

The first word of the subtitle, idiomatic, indicates our effort to limit ourselves to purely peculiar linguistic words and phrases and to make them known - to the extent that they are not already. The second word, interpretative, suggests that the idiomatic words are interpreted in the way they were utilized by the people of Lefkada or were created by the people themselves, whose strength in this is both clever and noteworthy as well as beneficial.

The third word of the title, folkloric, reveals that this dictionary contains a significant part of the folkloric material of Lefkada, material that arises from the meaning of the idiomatic word that contains the specific folkloric element, even though the word itself is merely a folkloric phenomenon.
