In "Underground," Dostoevsky makes a series of discoveries about human nature. Human nature is extreme, contradictory, and irrational. Man carries within him an irresistible attraction to the absurd, to unbridled freedom, to anguish.
Man does not necessarily tend towards profit. The ability to control himself leads him to choose anguish at every moment. He does not compromise with a rational organization of life. He places freedom above happiness.
However, freedom is not the triumph of logic over the emotional element, no, it is a freedom that is completely absurd, paranoid, which drives man outside the boundaries that have been set for him. This vast freedom torments him, leading him to destruction.
Torture and destruction, these are what man loves. The discoveries that Dostoevsky makes within this "underground" of human existence predetermine the fate of Raskolnikov, Stavrogin, Ivan Karamazov...
