Description

Description

In order to reunite with the man she loves, a cursed writer confined in an asylum, Margarita agrees to surrender her soul to the Devil. The novel The Master and Margarita is a modern version of the Faust myth set in 1930s Moscow and one of the most poignant and powerful love stories ever written.

The author worked on the novel for twelve years amidst the absolute dominance of Stalinist bureaucracy, aware that there was no chance of seeing his book published during his lifetime. Celebrating the freedom of artists against all forms of censorship, this masterpiece of world literature was published for the first time in the 1970s, making Bulgakov equal to the great classics: Dostoevsky, Gogol, Tolstoy, and Chekhov.

Today, eighty years after the author's death, the novel The Master and Margarita still seems relevant – as relevant as laughter, love, and the impact of power on people's lives can always be.
