The Akathist Hymn, the very popular "Greetings" to the Virgin Mary, is one of the most important hymnographic texts of the Byzantine period, connected not only with the ecclesiastical (liturgical) life but also with the national journey of Hellenism, which recognized in the person of the Most Holy Theotokos the "Champion General", its shelter and protection.
The Service of the Akathist Hymn is chanted together with the Small Compline partially on the Friday evenings of the first four weeks of Great Lent, and entirely on the Friday of the fifth week of the Fasts.
We hope that by presenting the text alongside its translation into modern Greek, the Service of the Akathist Hymn will become more accessible to pious Christians.
