The Apostolic Ministry of the Church of Greece now boasts, offering to the Church for use in worship the new edition of the liturgical book Paraklitiki, or Octoechos the Great. With this publication, the longstanding re-issue initiated by the Apostolic Ministry of the liturgical books is completed, with the main purpose of enriching the sacred temples with books that are more perfected than those currently in use, both in their external appearance and in their aesthetic printing, as well as correcting the essential errors that had crept into their earlier editions.
The aforementioned completion of the re-issue of the liturgical books signifies the offering of the full main hymnography of our Orthodox Church into its dual cycle, namely the annual and the weekly. Through the already published books, that is, the Menologion, the Triodion, and the Pentecostarion, the annual cycle of hymnography has been offered, containing the hymnography of the movable and immovable Feasts of the Lord and of the Theotokos, as well as the memories of the Saints celebrated each day.
The Paraklitiki now, as constituting the weekly cycle of hymnology, includes the hymnography of Sunday and the remaining six days of the week into eight periods, according to the eight modes of Byzantine Hymnography and Music. Thus, the cycle of the hymnography of the Paraklitiki is expanded into a period of eight weeks, while maintaining almost the same order of the hymns in the eight corresponding modes.
