This volume, which anthologizes, translates, and annotates seven novellas and three unpublished pieces from the entirety of Herodotus' work, has its own history. It was designed before the dictatorship for the 'Galaxias' publishing house. In the meantime, as the years go by, much has changed. However, I fear that the fanaticism of the original plan has remained recognizable in this final, current result.
Thus, the introduction and the translations from Herodotus' first book are primarily based on the edition 'Herodotus Histories, Clio, Introduction-Translation-Commentaries by D.N. Maronitis, Govostis, Athens 1996.' The strange thing is that that old edition has, for various reasons, somehow become alienated from its author.
This volume attempts to correct the alienation I've mentioned with everything new it contains and with the improvements made to the older material. The four novellas and the two unpublished pieces from books II-IX have been translated for the first time. As for the three essays that are imposed on the translation, they were written at a considerable or large time distance from the Govostis edition.
Returning after fifteen years or more to Herodotus (...), I would only like to note one thing. More generally, Herodotus' discourse and particularly his novellas taught me about the relationship that, rarely and in the peak moments of literature, is created between art and nature, (...) indicating the way that all kinds of reality reveal their true nature through the stripping imposed by artistic expression.
I hope the reader will find traces of this teaching in this volume, which takes on the task of translating and recognizing Herodotus' discourse through his novellas and unpublished pieces.
