Description

The movement of European modern architecture developed in Greece during the 1930s. Expressions of this include modern apartment buildings, hospitals, industrial structures, complexes of popular housing, and single-family homes in the city centers and suburbs.

However, the most significant achievement of the movement in the Greek territory is the realization of modern schools, built under the second government of Venizelos, from 1930 onward. A characteristic example of Venizelist modernization, the more than 3000 school buildings erected in every corner of the country not only became modern citadels of knowledge but also social condensers where generations of Greek children were educated.

This project was implemented by the then Office of Studies of the Ministry of Education, that is, by a public service that carried out the largest endeavor of modern school housing in Europe during the interwar period. The result of this action is documented in the unique book on Greek modern architecture of the 1930s, published in 1938 under the editorship of architect Patroklos Karantinos.

This precious and rare book is being reissued in the context of the international celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus School and the international conference "Bauhaus and Greece" taking place in Athens in May 2019. The volume is published with the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
