In the first part of the book, the concept and measurement of economic development is introduced. It also includes certain theories that were developed to interpret development, as well as a set of data that is gathered when development actually occurs, in order to recognize and identify this development.
The second part examines some alternative approaches to development, particularly planning and controls instead of the market. It also considers the issue of whether economic development can be sustainable and, if this is indeed possible, then in what sense and by what means.
In the third part, the authors address the contributions of human resources to development and the transformation of human life as a result of development. This part includes chapters on population, labor, education, and health.
The fourth part focuses on capital, the other major physical input in the development process. The topics addressed here are saving and investment, fiscal policy, financial policy, and finally, foreign capital and investments.
Finally, in the fifth part of the book, on production and trade, the authors acknowledge that developing countries still heavily rely on primary production and trade.
