When Hitler became Chancellor of the Third Reich in January 1933, he implemented the policy he had devised as the leader of the National Socialist Party: the suppression of all opposition, arrests, and racist persecutions, highlighted by the pompous displays of the crowds that constitute the ritual of the Nazi regime.
Jean Marabini describes in this book the passage of Berlin celebrating the years of triumph in the besieged Berlin of the bombed years. The Berliners, along with the "volunteers" of compulsory labor coming from all over Europe, are mobilized in the effort for the "total war." A German resistance that tends to emerge is significantly illuminated by the author. It will be ruthlessly crushed.
As Hitler dies, he takes Berlin down with him. When the Soviets arrive, the city is in ruins, lacking everything, and the population lives underground, feeding on horse carcasses. The Fuhrer is nothing more than the hated vampire of a dead capital. It is the end of a 1000-year empire that Hitler dreamed of.
