“The brochure that Spers wrote in prison about the strike and the deadly events in Serifos is perhaps the most important document for the true history of the labor movement. Having the majority among the tobacco workers and cigarette makers, Spers, Kouchtsoglou, and Fanourakis advocated for the autonomous struggle of workers at the 1st and 2nd congresses of GSEE, opposing the centralized system of a labor leadership that would channel the initiative of the working class.

The 2nd congress of GSEE took place in Athens in September 1920. There were only two opposing factions at this congress: the large majority of members and supporters of the KKE and the small anarcho-syndicalist group of K. Spers. This congress recognized the Communist Party as the sole political representative of the working class.

Against this decision, Spers spoke with determination and ferocity, advocating for the autonomy of the trade union movement and persistently highlighting the dangers threatening the working class from this substantial guardianship by the K.K.E. I attended this congress, and more than anything else, I was impressed by the passion with which Spers defended his views, his remarkable eloquence, and his quite convincing arguments.
