It has a pretty good handle that allows you to hold it steady on the counter with one hand while sharpening the knife with the other. It has three numbered sharpening stages. All you have to do is pass the knife a few times through each of the special slots (depending on the condition of the knife). We have had it for a few months, so far it does a very good job and it is reliable. We highly recommend it.
