Years ago, Jean Grey summoned a powerful cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force in a desperate attempt to save the X-Men from certain death. Adopting Jean's identity, the Phoenix annihilated an entire planet before the X-Men could seemingly destroy this deadly, otherworldly being. However, like the mythical flaming bird, the Phoenix was reborn from its ashes. Seeking to reconnect with Jean Grey, it returned to Earth, only to discover that its former host was no longer alive.
